I meant to post this last night but we all know how life can get in the way. But for this post I want to talk about inventions. So what do you think is the greatest invention of all time, past or present?
Recently I was watching a show where people compete to get their inventions produced for the masses, Shark Tank. One of the invention really stood out to me. Two undergraduate students from the University of Washington came up with a new way to communicate. It is called SignAloud, gloves that can translate American Sign Language (ASL) to speech or text.
It might not sound like much especially in a world of instant communication, but this invention will unlock so many doors for people who are unable to speak for whatever reason. For example, I spent several years in customer service and to this day I can still remember one customer who struggled to communicate. Not because he didn’t try, but rather because very few of us actual know ASL.
Every week he would come in and order the same meal, this made things easier for him and us if he had a cashier like myself that was there enough to remember what he wanted. There were occasions, however, when we would have to use a new cashier who was unfamiliar with our friend. He did carry a small notebook so that he could communicate with those of us who didn’t know how to sign, but that poses is own set of problems.
To have access to something like SignAloud, which would translate what he was signing into spoken words or even text on a computer screen, would give a new ease of communication. There would be less struggle trying to decipher the handwriting of another person, and give them a sense of freedom. As humans we all want our voices to be heard, and these students have found a way to give a voice to people who might have felt voiceless.
What do you think is the greatest invention of all time? Or do you think it has yet to be thought of? Is there something you want to see that might make life easier in some way, or make the world a better place for future generations? Let me know, I love to hear from others. And as always, have a beautiful night.
